2013 Sport Tour

Sport Tour Small

During the last week of the first term, GLA’s second sport tour got underway. The week of the 21st to 26th March was marked by a lot of practices, travelling, playing games and having a lot of fun!

Out teams competed against several schools among which were Graaff-Reinet, Middelburg High School and Linkside.

For the first few nights the students and teachers camped in Graaff Reinet preparing for the first games which were scheduled for the Saturday. Sadly these were cancelled due to the long weekend and not enough students competing from the opposing school.

That unfortunate event didn’t discourage the learners, but motivated them to work harder and practice longer for the next match. This was against Middelburg High School. The tennis team lost 7 games, but managed to win 1. The netball played well but also lost. The cricket was one of the highlights, which GLA won (duck vs lewis system) by a few runs. Most of the second games were disrupted very quickly as a burst of hail came forth from nowhere and covered the whole sport ground.

Later that night the squash team had their chance and here GLA and Middelburg both won 2 matches each. After the Middelburg games they went to Nieuw-Bethesda, visited the Owl house, Fossil center and a few small interesting shops in the small town.

Next we went to Cradock, for a quick stop over, and then went to Linkside in Port Elizabeth. Here we played cricket, and won the match with more than 5 overs to spare and with 10 wickets in hand. The tennis team played equally well, and finished with a 2-all draw (boys). The 1st netball team won, and the juniors just lost in a very tight game. The tour ended off with the students coming back to Jeffrey’s Bay, having learnt that being able to adapt to circumstances is a very good life skill to have!

We would like to thank all who supported the tour by going to Spur on Tuesdays to support the learners who worked there. We also want to say a big thank you to Caltex, who helped the learners by giving them a whole day with the car-wash facilities for free. Also thank you to Sandra from Real Nice Properties for her sponsorship and lastly a big thank you to Swinni and Sons for driving us all the way!
