Debutante Ball

Debutantes dancingFriday night, 27 May, saw the lovely Mentors Kraal Venue explode with glitz, glamour and many-a-ball gown when Global Leadership Academy (GLA) hosted its first ever debutante ball.  Attended by most of students and a fair number of the public, a night of celebration was held to honour the hard work of the students’ fundraising.

It is no secret that GLA intends to build the first eco friendly and sustainable High School in Africa right here in Jeffreys Bay.  With four phases to reach completion, phase 1 requires a staggering R53 million!

The children have been super busy with various projects to raise funds toward the new school building.  Each class challenged one another for the fundraising top spot.  There were vetkoek sales, night markets and table tennis competitions to mention only a few.  Now it is obvious that a simple bake sale won’t build a school, but this was not the aim.  The staff challenged each student to bring their portion, as a small boy did in the Bible, bringing his two small fish and five loaves of bread.  This was beautifully symbolised on the evening as Pastor Freddie Steenkamp, chairman of the GLA governing body, prophetically prayed over the students’ offering.

The evening began with a word of welcome followed by video clips of the efforts of each class.  As part of the offering each class selected a charity to which they donated 10% of their raised funds.  We would especially like to thank the following organisations for the blessings they bestowed on our Checquescommunity:   The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), CANSA, Ithemba crèche and after school centre, Victory 4 All, Tokomala, Hankey Children’s Home and Rainbow House.  The class representatives opened the dance floor with a stunning rehearsed tango.

A special treat came the way of the students when Principal Mrs. Marietjie McFarlane made her way to the stage in a “Queen Elizabeth” Ultramel yellow suit.  This was as a result of achieving the desired R50 000 to be raised mark.

A delicious finger dinner was served in a beautifully decorated venue when young and old came together to celebrate.  GLA would like to thank the Mentors Kraal staff as well as the staff of the school as for all their hard work.  They would also like to make special mention of Hair Affair in the Equinox Mall who styled the hair of the debutantes for free as well as all the parents who donated decorations and helped with the set up.
